Effective communication is a combination of the right choice of words, grammar, and correct expression. But people who don’t speak English as their mother tongue, concentrate more on grammar and vocabulary. While speaking English, grammar and vocabulary definitely need more attention, but for effective communication, there are equal needs for correct expression. The learners pay hardly any attention to this factor. Let’s discuss why proper expression is needed to have effective communion:

Communication is More Than Just Speaking

For learners, communication is almost synonymous with speaking. But in reality, speaking is just a part of communication. Let’s take an instance: on the birthday of your best friend, you wished him/her in the exact same tone you spoke in the board meeting. Will it be alright? Obviously no! Right?

communication means interacting with someone or some people. Speaking instead, mean presenting own perceptions to others. It includes fewer chances of interacting. For example, when you are giving a speech, you are presenting your views and other people present there are your audience or listeners. This is like a one-way communication, but effective communication means both ways communication of interaction.

Speak with expression

While interacting or having effective communication, it is important to have a good stock of words, a strong sense of grammar, fluency, and pronunciation. At the same time, a speaker must be able to give time to the person he/she is interacting with to speak is another important factor here. Also, the ability to show own feelings to the people and understanding their feelings at the time of speaking are also important.

Communication is not just speaking - communication is a bridge that connected two or more people. So, the correct expression is must while speaking.

A Determiner of Impression

A good impression is often much related to expression. How expressive a person is - this happens to be one of the benchmarks in terms of giving an impression. A person who communicates with good expression is way more impressive compare to others.

Speaking in the same tone and style throughout may make a person less impressive. This person can miss out on a lot of opportunities just because of their lack of expression. So, having great English speaking skills is not enough - to be impressive, expressions are equally important.

Lesser Chances of Miscommunication

Improper expressions are the reasons for miscommunication. Be it personal communication or workplace communication or any other type of communication, miscommunication is common in every sphere of life. The main reason for miscommunication is misinterpretation or misunderstanding of someone’s words. In case you go deeper, you will find out that the expression during their communication is the root cause of the misunderstanding or misinterpretation.

The one and only way to get rid of such an embarrassing situation is to work on your expressions during communication. It is possible that you said something in a light manner, but your tone or style, or expression of speaking denoted something completely different. So, it is better to improve your expressions along with working on your English vocabulary and grammar skills.

Better Relation Building

Miscommunication and misunderstanding spoil the relations. Be it family or friends or classmates or colleagues, don’t let a trivial misunderstanding spoil the relation.

A lack of expression often shows that a person does not value the relations at all. This breaks the relation from the grass root levels.

It is possible that a person has lesser expression compared to others, but that will lead the person to several problems almost in all the steps of life. The only way to avoid such problems is to express their feelings properly. Here, expression is also needed in the way of speaking too.

Career Growth

An employee with effective communication skills is much ahead of the people who have expression problems in their communication. People who speak correct English with proper expression are eligible to represent the company at global levels. Also, they are considered eligible to handle international business relations too. So, the importance of correct expression is visible.

Along with that people with correct expression are more eligible to work as team leaders and managerial positions. It is believed that they can control the people working under them in a better way. It is definitely true because a leader has to make the followers coordinate with each other to meet the collective goal. A leader with a lack of effective communication skills cannot do this easily.

To sum up, effective communication means communicate correctly. Here, correctness indicates correct words, correct grammar, fluency, pronunciation speaking speed, and correct expression (proper tone, and style). Expression deserves equal importance while working on communication skills and learners often overlook this.
